blue green colors flashing
Took a short trip to Cali last week and stayed on a houseboat!
SFO.
Sausalito!
Tourist!
Our dock.
Our houseboat! (via Airbnb)
First floor of houseboat.
Looking toward entryway. Behind the wooden door on the right is the shower, just off the kitchen. Limited space requires economical design solutions!
Tiny bathroom.
Kitchen.
Downstairs room (the windows are at water level).
Downstairs bed.
Top floor.
Narrow, steep steps to top floor.
Upstairs room.
View from the upper deck, outside the bedroom.
Tiki bar on lower deck!
Best feature of the floating home, in my opinion!!
Afternoon champs. How I do.
Attempt at "arty." Also how I do.
Walking around, looking around...
Lots of little sitting areas along the docks.
The dock that supposedly inspired this.
Many decorations on and around the boats.
Y'know, like a sun-singed Pillsbury Dough Boy holding a bottle of bubbly...
One of the dilapidated floating homes in the Gates Co-Op section of the Sausalito houseboat community. Having observed the placidity of the other flower-lined docks, Dan and I became super curious about this seemingly "bad neighborhood," accessed via a rickety dock framed by a tangle of power lines and signs of "Enter at Your Own Risk." Turns out these dwellers were the original hippie houseboat proprietors of the '60s and '70s—"water people" who hosted wild parties and got into frequent fights with the "hill people." Now they're stranded at low tide, their homes crumbling into the mud, and yet they refuse to leave. It's called living the dream.
The houseboat from Foul Play (and, according to Dan, the inspiration for our stay).
Amazing '70s houseboat.
View of our floating home from another dock.
The nearby Marin Headlands.
More Sausalito.

I LOVE THOSE houseboats! We toured them before and I fell in love. Super jealous you got to stay on one! Readymade magazine once did a feature on one of them and I wanted to live there, living the dream. But then I did something else.
I just tracked down that article! Super interesting.
